Sensitive Teeth?

Gentle teeth cleaning for sensitive teeth in Grande Prairie.

Sensitive teeth or gums should not prevent you from receiving professional dental care. At Shine Dental Hygiene, your appointment can be adjusted according to your sensitivity, comfort level and previous dental experiences.

Why are my teeth sensitive?

Tooth sensitivity can have several possible causes. These may include exposed root surfaces, gum recession, worn enamel, tooth grinding, decay, cracks, recent whitening or sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.

Your teeth and gums can be assessed before treatment begins. If an area requires further diagnosis or treatment, you may be referred to a dentist.

A cleaning tailored to your comfort

Before beginning your cleaning, we can discuss which teeth or areas feel sensitive and what has or has not worked well during previous appointments.

Your treatment can be adjusted throughout the appointment. We can work slowly, reduce pressure, take breaks and agree on a signal for when you would like us to stop.

Warm-water AIRFLOW polishing

AIRFLOW polishing uses a fine powder mixed with air and water to remove plaque and surface staining.

Warm water can be used to make the experience more comfortable for people whose teeth are sensitive to cold. AIRFLOW can also clean between the teeth and around orthodontic brackets, wires and retainers.

Hand-scaling options

If you dislike the sound, water or sensation of an ultrasonic scaler, your teeth can be cleaned using hand instruments instead.

Some people prefer hand scaling because it provides a quieter experience and allows individual sensitive areas to be approached gradually.

Desensitizing applications

Desensitizing treatments may be applied when appropriate to help manage sensitive areas. Fluoride varnish is also available and may help strengthen enamel and reduce sensitivity for some patients.

The most suitable option depends on the cause and location of your sensitivity.

Local anesthetic and needle-free options

When additional comfort is needed, traditional local anesthetic may be used to provide deeper freezing.

Needle-free Cetacaine is also available when appropriate. This topical anesthetic can be placed directly into the gum pockets to provide temporary pain control during scaling without an injection.

We will review your health history, medications, allergies and individual needs before using any anesthetic.

A calm, one-on-one environment

Your appointment takes place inside a quiet, private mobile dental hygiene clinic. There is no crowded waiting room or stream of unfamiliar people moving around.

You remain in control throughout the appointment and can watch Netflix, ask questions or take breaks whenever needed.
