How much does a dental cleaning cost in Grande Prairie?

This is one of the questions I am asked most often—and the honest answer is that the total depends on what you need.

A dental cleaning is not billed as one flat service. Scaling is based on time, while polishing, fluoride, exams and X-rays are billed as separate services. Some people require very little scaling, while others have heavier or more tenacious buildup that takes longer to remove.

The prices shown below are based on the current 2026 Alberta Dental Fee Guide.

Scaling: $87.25 per 15-minute unit

Scaling removes plaque and hardened buildup, commonly called tartar or calculus, from the teeth and below the gumline.

One unit of scaling is 15 minutes and costs $87.25.

I generally need approximately three units of scaling for an adult, although it could be more or less depending on the amount of buildup and how tenacious it is.

Three units of scaling (45 minutes): $261.75

This is why it can be difficult to quote the exact cost of a cleaning before seeing your mouth. Someone requiring two units will pay less than someone requiring four or five units.

AIRFLOW polishing and stain removal: $77.75

One unit of polishing or stain removal is $77.75.

Shine Dental Hygiene offers AIRFLOW polishing as a modern alternative to the traditional polishing cup and paste. AIRFLOW uses a fine powder mixed with air and warm water to remove plaque and surface staining.

It can reach between the teeth, into small pits and grooves and around orthodontic brackets, wires and retainers.

Fluoride varnish: $37.65

A fluoride-varnish application is $37.65.

Fluoride can help strengthen tooth enamel, reduce the risk of decay and support people who experience tooth sensitivity. Fluoride is optional and can be discussed during your appointment.

Example of a typical adult cleaning

A typical adult appointment requiring three units of scaling, one unit of AIRFLOW polishing or stain removal, and fluoride would be:

Scaling—three units or 45 minutes: $261.75

AIRFLOW polishing/stain removal: $77.75

Fluoride varnish: $37.65

Estimated total: $377.15

This is only an example. Your total may be lower or higher depending on how much scaling you require and which optional services you choose.

Dental exam fees

The type of complete dental hygiene exam is based on which teeth are present in the mouth.

Primary-dentition exam: $89.80

This exam is for a child whose mouth contains primary or baby teeth.

Mixed-dentition exam: $122.35

This exam is for a child who has a mixture of primary baby teeth and permanent adult teeth.

Permanent-dentition exam: $143.85

This exam is for people with permanent teeth, generally children aged 12 and older as well as adults.

An exam includes an assessment of the teeth, gums and overall oral health. The appropriate exam is determined by the teeth present—not simply by the person’s age.

X-ray fees

X-rays are separate from the exam and cleaning. The type and number of images recommended depend on your age, dental history, current oral health, areas of concern and when your previous X-rays were completed.

Four bitewing X-rays: $110.10

Bitewing X-rays show the areas between the back teeth and help identify concerns that cannot be seen during a visual examination.

Two periapical X-rays: $59.90

Periapical X-rays show the entire tooth, including the root and surrounding bone. They may be recommended for specific teeth or areas of concern.

A common set consisting of four bitewing X-rays and two periapical X-rays would total $170.00.

Not everyone requires the same number or type of X-rays. Any recommended images and their cost can be discussed with you before they are taken.

Why can’t every cleaning have one set price?

The final cost can vary because every person may need a different combination of services:

The amount and tenacity of buildup

Whether AIRFLOW polishing or stain removal is selected

Whether fluoride is selected

What information should I provide?

To submit a claim, we generally need:

The name of your insurance provider

Your policy or plan number

Your member, certificate or identification number

The name and birthdate of the primary plan holder

Information about any secondary insurance plan

Providing this information before your appointment gives us time to confirm that your plan can receive electronic claims.

Direct billing

When direct billing is available, the claim is submitted to your insurance provider after treatment.

Some plans pay the dental provider directly, while others reimburse the patient. Insurance companies may also require the patient to pay a deductible, co-payment or remaining balance.

Direct billing does not guarantee that every service will be covered. Patients are responsible for any amount not paid by their plan.

Canadian Dental Care Plan

Shine Dental Hygiene accepts CDCP, the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

CDCP may provide coverage for eligible services such as exams, X-rays, scaling, polishing and fluoride. The services covered, frequency limits and any applicable co-payment depend on the patient’s individual CDCP coverage.

CDCP fees and coverage are determined by the federal program and may differ from the Alberta Dental Fee Guide. Any patient portion can be discussed whenever that information is available.

NIHB

Shine Dental Hygiene also accepts NIHB, the Non-Insured Health Benefits program, for eligible First Nations and Inuit clients.
